Sexual Harassment in Penyalin Cahaya's Production

        This past week, the Indonesian film industry has become a hot topic on Twitter. This was due to the controversy due to the film Penyalin Cahaya (Photocopier). Penyalin Cahaya is a film directed by Wregas Bhatuneja. This film previously received much appreciation for appearing in an international festival in Busan, the Busan International Film Festival, in 2021. In fact, at local festivals such as the Indonesian Film Festival (FFI), this film broke the record previously held by Marlina, the Killer of Four Acts, because Penyalin Cahaya became the debut of a feature-length film that won 12 categories. One of them is the Best Writer award given to Wregas Bhanuteja and Henricus Pria. 

        Since January 9, 2022, the discussion has started to appear on Twitter that One of the scriptwriters is a perpetrator of sexual harassment. This was acknowledged the next day by Production House Rekata Studio and Kaninga Pictures, which contained an acknowledgment that one of the authors had been removed from the Penyalin Cahaya Team and deleted in the credits title. "Based on the information we received from a community that manages reporting incidents of sexual harassment, we found that a name from the film team 'Penyalin Cahaya' was listed as the reported person for his alleged past actions."

        "As an ethical responsibility for our commitment and to respect the reporting and the process that will follow it, we have decided to remove the name of the reported party from the credits of the film 'Penyalin Cahaya' and in the film's published materials. The reported party is no longer a part of the film' Penyalin Cahaya' and Rekata Studio." The statement was shared by Rekata Studio, Kenanga Pictures, and Wregas. This is still being protested by people who do not want to mention the perpetrator's name. 

        Penyalin Cahaya is a film that tells the story of Suryani (Shenina Cinnamon), removed from the list of scholarship recipients at her campus after a photo of her drinking alcohol appeared on her social media account. Not only there, Sur, Suryani's nickname from her friends, also found that she was drugged and sexually harassed when she was drunk. The film, which has the Drama, Thriller, and Mystery genre, can be watched on Netflix since January 13, 2022.
